What is Cleaner Greener Leeds?

Groundwork Leeds and Leeds City Council are working together to improve the environment in Leeds. Working closely with communities and schools, we will help to create a cleaner, greener Leeds by raising awareness and encouraging community participation. To do this, individual project officers will consult on improvements that residents would like to see and work out a way to put them into action. They will also support community groups to get involved in helping to make the city cleaner and greener.

The award winning campaign Cleaner, Greener Leeds is about enabling community groups and schools to take part in cleaning up, looking after and improving their local environment to create a sense of identity and pride. Our community projects are designed to improve and smarten main streets in and out of Leeds, improve the appearance and usability of bin yards and enhance open green spaces across the city. By working with the people of Leeds, we aim to become Britain’s Cleanest City by 2009.

We also have an education programme delivering litter awareness in local schools school; introducing an “adopt a site” scheme, alongside traditional litter picks and workshops.

However, we cannot do this without your help. We need the help of our communities to take ownership of their neighbourhood and make it a place where people are proud to live, work, play and visit.

What is Groundwork doing?

Our community team currently has 5 community coordinators who are working to support community groups. They consult residents; attend meetings, community events and carry out door to door surveys giving residents a voice to turn their ideas into environmental action.

We are supporting local people by:

· Involving them in the development of projects

· Providing means by which to communicate information (such as leaflets)

· Enabling them to comment on and make suggestions for future improvements and maintenance

· Helping them make an active contribution

Once consultation is completed, we are implementing the projects through planting schemes and landscaping.

Our education team is supporting schools in the “adopt a site” scheme aimed at improving green spaces situated near schools. The Cleaner, Greener education projects focus on the delivery of a litter awareness campaign, planting schemes and green space consultation aimed at creating a sense of local pride. Have a look at the schools section for more information.

We are also working alongside community, youth and faith groups and schools to submit their Cleaner Greener Leeds Portfolios to the Community and City Pride Awards. As the Cleaner Greener Leeds programme develops it is hoped that community groups and schools will develop and deliver their own projects for submission to the awards.

What can you do?

Most people can think of an area in their community that could do with a facelift. This might be a green space that has been used to dump rubbish, bin yards that are underused and unsafe or a local pathway which has become overgrown. This local knowledge is vital and you can let us know and make a real difference.

Get involved by organising a community clean up or bulb planting event in your local area. In fact any activity that improves your local community is welcome. We can provide information, tools, equipment and ideas as well as help and advice in getting started.

Take part in the award winning Cleaner Greener Leeds and register your community, youth or faith group for the Community and City Pride Awards. This is your chance to shout about what you have done and get recognition for all your hard work. Have a look at the Community and City Pride Section for more information on how to apply and how Groundwork can help with your submission.

You can also make your community cleaner and greener by:

· Putting your litter in the bin

· Not dropping your cigarette ends on the floor

· Cleaning up after your dog

· Keeping your garden or yard clear of litter

· Reporting any fly-tipping and discarded needles using the Call Centre

· Getting involved in community events, planitng trees/shrubs and tidy ups

· Joining your local community or faith group

Contact the Call Centre on 0845 124 0113

What can schools do?

Photo: Bulb plantingTake part in our free education programme. The Education Team at Groundwork Leeds can deliver exciting litter awareness workshops to schools. The free workshops aim to challenge attitudes towards  litter, and to encourage children to take pride and ownership of their local area.

The workshops are designed for Year 4 or 5 classes.  Some of the things the pupils will do in the workshops include:

· Explore the definition of litter

· Take part in a litter pick and survey of an area

· Complete a questionnaire about the effects of litter

· Examine the problems that litter causes

For further details of workshops, click here.

In addition to this, Groundwork are actively encouraging schools to adopt a site, which they can maintain and improve for future generations. The Education Team will run consultation workshops   empowering pupils to improve their local area, in partnership with community groups.

School projects that get involved in Cleaner Greener Leeds can register for the Community and City Pride Awards. This is your chance to shout about what you have done and get recognition for all your hard work. Have a look at the Community and City Pride Section for more information on how to apply and how Groundwork can help with your submission.
