JULIANNE TATE BA(Hons) DipLA MLI (second from left), a Chartered Landscape Architect, with fifteen years experience of working within the national network of Groundwork Trusts, Julianne currently manages Leeds’ Places Programme and Landscape Consultancy Service.  Commissions reflect a variety of clients from the private, public and voluntary sectors, including housing regeneration and large scale urban visual survey and analysis, business and industrial premises.  She has a particular interest in environmental and land art and recently developed and ran ‘Spaces by Design’ for Glasshouse, a participative, three-day course at The National Tenants Resource Centre. 

ROB MEETHAM BA(Hons) MSc MLA MLI (middle), one of our Senior Landscape Architects, joined Groundwork seven years ago, following a period working in private practice.  Rob is particularly interested in sustainability and regeneration issues, with projects including large-scale routeway and biodiversity schemes, Environmental Impact Assessments and urban area improvements.  A Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute, Rob covers the South & West of the City and leads on our Green Business Parks and Green Infrastructure Programmes.  He is currently studying for a further qualification in Urban Design.

KATE STEPHENS BA(Hons) DipLA MLI (right), also a Senior Landscape Architect, joined Groundwork early in 1998, following a year working with Hanson Aggregates.  She has extensive experience of design led consultation methods, particularly Participatory Appraisal, with projects ranging from school grounds, community and sensory gardens, to habitat creation, quarry, sand and gravel pit restoration and housing estate masterplanning. Kate works primarily with our North Leeds Programmes and helped develop the ‘Spaces by Design’ course with Julianne; she is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute.

DALE WOODCOCK BA(Hons) DipLA (second from right), qualified in 1998 and was employed by private practices in both Australia and Malaysia, working on a town centre regeneration project in Sydney and the design of a high profile public open space in Melaka.  Since returning from travelling, Dale has worked for Groundwork, joining the Leeds team in 2002, he specialises in estate masterplanning, play area design and alleyway-gating.  Dale manages our North Leeds Sustainable Communities Programme, funded by the European Union. He has an additional Diploma in Construction and is currently an Associate of the Landscape Institute.

ANDY SPARGO BA(Hons) DipLA (left), completed his studies in 2002, having spent his year out working for Groundwork Camden and Islington; he joined the team in 2003, following a position as Manager of a Garden Design Service for a franchise company.  Andy has particular experience of canalside and other access projects, community garden design and developing school grounds.  He leads on our projects in the Lower Aire Valley and manages our Design Advisories Service across the City. Andy is an Associate of the Landscape Institute.


ROBIN COPELAND BA (Hons) Dip LA  MI Hort (third from right), joined the team in 2004, having worked in private practise for three years.  Projects range from Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, masterplanning and detailed design to large scale consultation planning.  Clients include local authorities, architects, developers and engineers, private businesses and individuals. Robin previously ran his own landscape contracting business and is both an Associate of the Landscape Institute and a Member of the Institute of Horticulture.  He is particularly interested in the design and management of vegetation, legislation in relation to trees, green roofs and sustainable construction.


FRANCESCA HARRIS BSc (Hons) MLA (third from left), has a degree in Ecological Resource Management and Masters in Landscape Architecture, qualifying in 2004. She first joined Groundwork as a volunteer, working on a range of community-based projects, returning to the team after completing her studies and completing a placement in private practise. Francesca is particularly interested in urban renewal, sustainable communities, habitat creation and practical conservation and has volunteered for BTCV; she is an Associate of the Landscape Institute.
