Education Volunteers

Volunteer - Claire MawdsleyPhoto: education volunteer

I have come to Groundwork Leeds from The University of Leeds as a volunteer working 4 days a week. I have been placed in the education team and I am working alongside Dion Auriac on the SORT – IT project which is proving to be a lot of fun. I have been into several primary schools to help in the delivery of assembly’s and workshops and have also attended some meetings with head teachers.

Working in the office on different tasks is great, especially as there are always plenty of cakes and biscuits to munch on!

I have had a warm welcome from everyone at Groundwork and now feel a valuable part of the education team. I am glad to have taken up the opportunity that Groundwork gave me and hope to improve on and develop many skills over the next 8 months.

Volunteer Case Study - Katie Stott

Katie Stott began volunteering at Groundwork Leeds in May 2002, after gaining a degree in Environmental Management. Soon after she started, the Education Coordinator left leaving Katie as the only member of the education team. Katie took on the task of developing and delivering a summer playscheme in south Leeds for 6-11 year olds allowing her to rapidly gain experience in environmental education.

In September 2002 Katie was joined by Paul Fieldhouse, the new Education Coordinator. Soon after, she was offered a full time post on the education team. For two years Katie continued to gather valuable experience and before long, was implementing and managing her own projects. She was finally promoted to the role of Education Coordinator in January 2004.

In September 2005, Katie left Groundwork to take a Graduate Teaching Placement at Robin Hood Primary School, fulfilling a lifelong ambition to become a teacher.

Katie says of her time at Groundwork, both as a volunteer and an employee:

“I have enjoyed every minute I have spent working for Groundwork. It has been a journey with many memorable experiences and I feel so privileged to have shared those experiences with so many inspiring and exciting people. Groundwork is not simply a job; it becomes part of your life. I look forward to working with Groundwork again in the future…one way or another.”
